Candyland

One of my daughters’ favorite games, when they were younger, was Candyland; we still play it every once in a while. Have you ever played it? It’s a fun game as you make consistent progress towards the end. But the minute you draw the dreaded card that regresses your progress, the game loses its charm. One second you are well on your way to winning, and the next, you are twenty steps back. All of a sudden, the goal seems out of reach as others continue moving forward.

Do you feel as if your life is a game of Candyland? You are moving forward, trekking along, reaching goals, and passing obstacles, and all of a sudden, you are hit with an unexpected card. A card that pulls you back muddles your routine and jumbles your plans.

Change is difficult, especially the type that disrupts our routine and makes us feel as if we failed. But rest assured, change forces us to look at life through a different lens. It forces us to appreciate what we have. It reminds us that life is short.

The next time you are hit with a card that draws you back, don’t feel discouraged and don’t lose hope that you’re moving backward. Have faith, and trust that there might be a lesson you were supposed to learn the first time but didn’t.

Taking a step back could also be a chance to reevaluate and reinvent yourself and your goals.
