Recently I saw this post by John Maxwell, and I had to share it with you.
Do you know the difference between a “comeback story” and a “comeback study”?
A “comeback story” is inspirational. You know the plot by heart: a hero falls from grace and battles against great odds just for one more shot at redemption. Comeback stories are a great part of our cultural narrative—we love the idea of someone rebuilding their life, and we love the way those tales leave us feeling inspired.
But how often do we hear a great comeback story and do something with that inspiration?
That’s what makes a “comeback study” different. A comeback study is when you analyze a great comeback story and look for the lessons within. It’s when you intentionally turn inspiration into action and use that momentary emotion to create lasting momentum.

People fall from grace often, we’ve all been there to a degree. Some people’s falls are harder than others. It takes a long time to come back. Falling is a quicker process than climbing. But as we start to rise, some will look at us with suspicion while others will look at us with compassion. When you rise, be a comeback study not story. Learn from what didn’t work last time, build on it, and move forward. Do not dwell on the past or stay down too long. Push through with humility, be touchable, and make the best of your hardship. Also remember, when someone else falls, that you look at them with compassion, reach out, and maybe put your arm around them and tell them it’s going to be okay.
