Eulogia

A few weeks ago, I listened to a talk about the word ‘eulogy.’ I can’t remember the content of the talk but the word stuck out. So I researched the word’s meaning and its origination. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, Eulogy means high praise, good speech, a commendatory oration in honor of one deceased. The word originated from the Greek word eulogia, which means “to praise” somebody or something.

We hear the word eulogy and we naturally associate it with funerals. We put time and effort into praising someone that has passed, which is admirable. But, how often do we take the time to praise and acknowledge those living around us? You’ve heard the saying, “saving the best for last?” I think we should apply the best right now instead of saving it for the end when it’s too late.

Think of it this way, would you much rather hear praise and accolades from your family and friends now or would you rather have everyone else hear about you at your funeral?

Have you or someone you know lost someone and thought “I wish I had one more day so I could tell them how I felt?”

Life is fragile and short. You are healthy and happy one day, and completely the opposite the next.

A year ago today, my favorite athlete of all time, Kobe Bryant, passed away. His passing impacted many lives including mine. Countless stories emerged after his death. People showed their gratitude for the legacy he left behind after his passing. Throughout all of this, a part of me has wondered, did he know the impact he had made on people’s lives while he was still alive?

Don’t save the best for last. Take the time today to tell your loved ones how you feel. Praise them today when it matters because you never how you can impact their lives with your kind words.
