When we were kids, we used to think the scariest part of the darkness was the monsters. Monsters under the bed, monsters in the closet, or even monsters behind the dresser. The darkness created a fear within us because we couldn’t see into it. I don’t think we’re truly afraid of the dark or the monsters, I think we’re afraid of what the darkness hides, we’re afraid of what’s out there, we’re afraid of what we can’t see. When we come face to face with the darkness, our mind starts to fill in the blanks, creating monsters, and a hundred possibilities of why we should be afraid of the dark. But when we step into that darkness, take a second to allow our eyes to adjust; we realize that it’s not as scary as we had imagined it be. We find out that monsters aren’t real and whatever we were afraid of seems less terrifying now and more manageable.
Same goes for our reality as adults. Our fear has transformed from the monsters under our beds to the unknowns that lay ahead. The unknowns of life! With each choice we make and with each step we take, our unknowns get scarier and more realistic. Our mind starts to create a hundred different scenarios of how things could go wrong. Being left alone with our imagination is a scary place when it comes to the unknown. But if we step into whatever it is we’re facing, take a deep breath and allow ourselves a moment or two to adjust, we will uncover possibilities beyond our imagination.
