My husband and I watch a lot of sports, especially basketball. Last week, one of our favorite sports anchors, Ernie Johnson, lost his 33 yrs old son, Michael, to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Ernie’s wife found Michael in a Romanian orphanage. When she considered adopting him, she was told not to because he was no good. Despite the warning, she pursued his adoption because she knew if she didn’t, she would spend the rest of her life wondering about that little boy. Shortly after coming to America, they received Michael’s diagnosis and were told his life expectancy would be in the teens. Not only did he live to be 33 yrs old, but he touched so many lives with his constant love despite his disabilities. He told everyone he loved them. In a wheelchair and on a ventilator, he became part of a basketball team and was known for saying, “I love you too.” It didn’t matter who he came in contact with; his love was infectious.
At a very young age, he was labeled as no good and dismissed. As if the orphanage was waiting for his life to come to an end. Little did they know, his life had more value than they ever could have possibly fathomed.
Everyone has value and a purpose. It’s not up to us to decide people’s value, nor is it up to them to decide ours. Our value reveals its self as we live out our purpose.
