Our Story

This past weekend I had two speaking engagements for the same church. This church’s congregation is mostly comprised of immigrants, many of them from Africa. On Friday, I spoke to the youth group about the culture shock we face as immigrants when we first come to America. I also talked about the pressures of life, especially when we start to grow and adapt to this new way of life and our parents remain stuck in the old, afraid to change because change is unknown. On Sunday I had the opportunity to share my testimony with the parents and the rest of the congregation. It was an incredible weekend and an incredible experience all around. I am grateful for the opportunities and grateful to be able to use my story to encourage others.

Almost everyone in the congregation has a story to tell, a testimony of survival and triumph. Some of their stories are even more touching and moving than mine. However, most of them are afraid to share because it’s either too painful to relive those memories, their mind tells them they are still in danger, or they don’t think anyone wants to listen. The only life the youth knew prior to coming to America, was the refugee camps in their country. And I can tell you from firsthand experience, refugee camps do not provide a luxurious life. From numerous families being crammed together in a small space, living with limited supplies such as food and water, to various untreated illnesses, and no education for the young. These families spend their days waiting for hope to shine through and provide them with an opportunity and salvation from the current situation.

You have a story to tell…we all do! We’ve all had our fair share of trauma and heartbreak but we have also experienced joy and accomplishments as well. I encourage you to use your story to build others. Don’t dismiss your experiences as minute. They have helped you grow and be stronger and I’m sure they can do the same for someone else.
