Christmas Memories

One of my favorite holidays is Christmas, especially in Iraq.  The anticipation for this day was extremely high as we began our preparations in late November, early December.  It all started with baking delicious pastries called “Kileche” which took hours to assemble and bake.  All the women in my immediate family, around 8, would gather to help.  Despite preparing those weeks in advance, we had to put off consuming them until Christmas morning.  Mom carried on a childhood tradition of purchasing my sisters and me new outfits complete with shoes, socks, and hair accessories to wear on Christmas morning.  Living in a Muslim country, Christians/Assyrians were only granted three days off from school and work to celebrate this precious holiday and we took advantage of that opportunity.  Every second of each day was consumed by traditional festivities.

Mom and dad played Santa Claus each year by placing one present on our beds on Christmas Eve.  That was the only present we received for the holiday.  However, when grandparents, aunts, and uncles gathered for the festivities, they always distributed money to all the children in the family.

Looking back, it’s not the money or the “one” gift I received that stands out the most, but the memories my family members created, traditions they instilled within me, and the value of hope of Christmas they bestowed upon me.

This season can be just as maddening and stressful as it is joyful.  From shopping for the last minute presents to all the planning and final touches to make Christmas perfect for our loved ones.  One day, when you or your family members look back, it’s not the presents they will remember, but the memories shared that will hold a bigger place in their hearts and yours.  It’s tough to look past the marketing efforts behind this season.  But don’t lose sight of what’s really important here…MEMORIES!  Here is to making new memories on Christmas day!!!!

  1. Thank you , Ramina, for your heartwarming posts. Thank you for sharing your family traditions. I think here in America many take such a special occasion for granted. Losing its true meaning. Yes, we need to remember old memories and make new ones for our younger generations.
May God Bless you and your home this Christmas season and throughout the New Year.
    Merry Christmas !!!!
