Some of us relate to them, some of us wish we could be them, while others escape reality through them. For most, superheroes have been a part of our lives, especially the past decade when Marvel took the world by storm. From Iron Man to Batman, to Captain America, they come with hope and the “save the world” mentality, but that comes with a price, a price of risking it all for the sake of others.
Today, our superheroes don’t come with a cape or a hammer, but with a stethoscope and a ventilator. Our superheroes come wearing scrubs, gloves, and masks; bringing hope to the sick, with the same “save the world” mentality as they risk their lives to save others. When the world is told to stay home, they are asked to walk out and step into the middle of the sickness, while keeping a brave face.
Though I know it’s hard to imagine what is going on within the walls of the hospital, especially when we are quarantined at home with our families, I hope I am able to provide you with a tiny glimpse. My youngest sister, Rodina, is a charge nurse at one of the best hospitals in Denver. Her job hasn’t been easy and the pandemic has only made it more stressful, which has come with a higher level of anxiety as they await to see how this virus which managed to cripple entire countries, will continue to unfold. Watching my sister and so many other doctors and nurses fight through this pandemic has been encouraging and humbling. I know personally I feel restricted from having to wear a mask to run errands, while healthcare workers are having to wear one mask for over 12 hours due to the mask shortages, and that’s not even accounting the tight N95 masks that are needed for certain patients that literally leave behind marks from their tight seals. Not to mention the mental struggles of watching patients fight for every breath. I’ve spoken to a few friends who are on the frontlines as doctors, nurses, or CDC employees who have described some of their hospitals as war zones. I have lived through numerous wars and I can imagine what a war zone looks like and the stress and trauma it can inflict on those involved.
While the quarantine has been stressful in so many aspects as we are trapped at home going stir crazy, taking a financial hit, and experiencing a new moment in history, our 2020 heroes are facing a different set of stressors that we can’t fathom nor pretend to relate to. All we can do is pray for them! Although our quarantine has not been pleasant for many, know that it has alleviated additional stress for our doctors and nurses, it has also prevented the possibility of overwhelming the system. Next time you come across anyone who works in the medical field, please make sure to thank them for their service!

Good writing, good insights. Proud of you. I miss you.
